CATERINA SILENZI, Buta no Atama Raku
Friday 25th June 2010 | 8pm-10pm
at GLORIAMARIAgallery’s courtyard, Via Watt 32, Milan
“It was 1791, a Vodou priestess, possessed by the spirit of Ezili Danto, sacrificed a black pig and asked those present to drink its blood.
She swore that the ritual would enable them to drive off the French slave owners.
One week later, more than a thousand colonists were killed and the Haitian Revolution had begun”.
GLORIAMARIAgallery is proud to present a Raku performance by the young artist Caterina Silenzi, who on this occasion will explore the alchemic events which are tied to the birth of the Haitian Revolution.
At the gallery, on Friday, June 25, 2010, from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM, you will be able to witness the creation of a Raku ceramic, an ancient alchemic technique which has been rediscovered by Caterina. Raku ceramics originated in Japan during the 16th century. The crafting of this type of ceramic represents a close bonding with nature, as the primary elements are essential to the creation process: earth, air, fire and water. The objects undergo a unique baking process which requires each piece to be removed from the oven wh ile it is still incandescent. Once the red hot object comes in contact with earth, air and water, its transformation is complete. Under the expert artistry of the ceramicist, in a continuous mutation of color and light, the artwork then cools and settles into its final form.
Caterina Silenzi, born in Porto San Giorgio in 1977, lives and works in Fermo, Marche. Silenzi has studied Sculpture and Photography at the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Macerata, and achieved a Master at the Bilbao University. In Bilbao, Silenzi founded Studio 8, along with Alberto Sinpatron, a project space where the artist has been able to experiment further medias. She participated to Paradoxa in 2010, curated by Gabriele Di Francesco, at the Palazzina Azzurra San Benedetto del Tronto, and the Artika Festival at Villa Colloredo Mells, Recanati.
